Keeper of the Rolls

Every county in England and Wales has a Keeper of the Rolls. The incumbent is responsible for the rolls bearing the names and details of all those appointed as magistrates to the Commission of the Peace for the county.

Until 31 March 2005, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster appointed a Keeper of the Rolls for Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. Under the Courts Act 2003 the appointments are now made by the Lord Chancellor. The office holder is usually the Lord-Lieutenant, but not necessarily so.

Keepers of the Rolls in the County Palatine are:

Lancashire
The Lord Shuttleworth, JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire
Appointed in 1997.

Greater Manchester
Colonel Sir John Timmins, KCVO, OBE, TD, JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester
Appointed in 1987.

Merseyside
Dame Lorna Muirhead, DBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside
Appointed in 2006.
