Historical Properties

The Duchy of Lancaster is custodian of a remarkable architectural heritage.

No fewer than ten castles survive on the Duchy's estates in England and Wales. Most are ruins, but provide excellent examples of Norman and later building periods. Some, such as Lancaster Castle, are among the finest surviving fortresses of their type in the UK. Associated with the castles are many dramatic historic events, including rebellions, sieges, executions and trials.

Other interesting buildings in the care of the Duchy include the Savoy Chapel in London, and the Moot Hall in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, where ancient mining courts are held each year.

The Duchy is fully committed to ensuring access to its historic properties. Most of them are leased or entrusted to guardians charged with providing visitor access and providing interpretation on a year-round basis.
